GenCon Tips, Rules, and Things to Bring

Are you going to GenCon this year? Have you read my GenCon Indy tips article? You should. :)

GenCon 2015 is less than two weeks away (7/30–8/2). I meant to post these tips earlier to encourage people to physically prepare for all the walking and heavy-book-carrying… but there’s still time!

  • Make an effort to walk a lot more between now and the start of the show, and your body will be more conditioned to it and it’ll be less of shock to your system.
  • Get extra sleep in the few days leading up to the show. You’ll need it.
  • Remember to have fun.

Here is a link to the official PDF map of the exhibit hall–very handy. There might be last-minute exhibitor changes, so I’d check the link the Tuesday before the convention, just in case.

Barring some disaster, I’ll be at the show, but I’m going as a civilian with no set schedule (although I do have my eye set on a gamers-relevant film premiering Thursday 8pm at the Westin Grand Ballroom V…). If you see me, say hi!

  1. Going as a civilian eh? That must be a new thing for you. As a GenCon veteran, I wholeheartedly agree with your tips! It can be REALLY hard to follow them all though. For those who haven’t been there before, it’s really easy to get overwhelmed by everything going on, especially when walking into the exhibit hall.

One comment about bringing a camera though. There are a lot of awesome things to take pictures of and with throughout the Con. But if you want to take a picture of a cos player, get there permission first. This will avoid unnecessary embarrassment and general creepiness.

And don’t forget all of the pick up games that are constantly happening in every nook and cranny surrounding the convention center!
